Bagels are one of those go to meals that are simple, yet so delicious, especially when paired with the right food. You can get super creative with them and that’s what makes them so amazing, aside from tasting really good.
So a question I get a lot is what can you do if you have a bunch of bagels and you don’t want them to get stale and you would like to enjoy them another day. Is it possible to freeze bagels and if so, for how long?
Can You Freeze Bagels?
Yes, you are able to freeze bagels and this is one of the best ways to store them, so that they do not go stale quickly. The great thing is that you will be able to keep them for a couple of months and once defrosted, they would almost be like when you first had them.
Most people who freeze bagels do so as they want to save them, so they can enjoy them sometime in the future. Maybe they happened upon a great sale or just ended up with too many, that would eventually go stale as they are unable to finish them at that appointed time.
Whatever the reason, they can be frozen and it is pretty easy to do.

Best Way to Go About Keeping Bagels in the Freezer
Getting the bagels ready and prepped to be stored in the freezer is nothing complicated and the whole process is quick and simple. We will highlight the steps below.
Steps
- If you have fresh bagels, you could opt to wrap them in plastic wrap and then do a second layer of foil
- Once wrapped, place in an air-tight container or freezer bag.
- Before placing the bag in the freezer, use a marker and write the date on the container/bag, so that you can have an idea how long the bagels have been sitting in the freezer.
- When ready to use, defrost at room temperature.
Please Note: If you have store bought bagels that are in their own plastic bag, most people just throw them in the freezer. This is not the most ideal option, as there is a possibility that the bagels could develop freezer burn.
You should also be aware that the bagels might absorb scents from the freezer if not wrapped up properly.

Defrosting Bagels
When you are ready to enjoy your frozen bagels, thawing them out is really simple.
Steps
- Take out frozen bagel
- Let sit at room temperature till fully defrosted.
If you do not have the time to sit and wait for them to get to room temperature, a quicker method is to reheat them. You can either use the oven, microwave and toaster. (We go more in-depth in our guide to reheating bagels).
