A gallon of ice cream can go a far way. A typical serving of ice cream is about three scoops (one scoop is four ounces), which is the equivalent of 1 ½ cups or approximately 12 ounces.
The amount of servings you get from a gallon of ice cream will depend on whether or not you follow the established serving guidelines and a few other factors. For instance, it is important to take into consideration, the ages and sizes of those who will be eating it. Small children will almost certainly consume less than adults, and teenagers can have voracious appetites, hence consuming more.
You may also need to consider how the ice cream will be served, will it be a dessert offering or a main course item such as a banana split or a full sundae or with toppings.
Additionally, will you be adding toppings like nuts, sprinkles, candy or fruit? If so, then you could get away with smaller servings as toppings are usually in the ratio of 1/4 to 1/3 cup per serving.
Having considered all the above, a gallon in its smallest acceptable serving size of a 1 cup measurement, will feed about 16 people. If a larger serving is desired, say 1 ½ cup, then the gallon will serve approximately 10 people.
