I know it is a weird question, but I am pretty sure you ended up here because you are trying to figure out if you can or can’t freeze chocolate.

Whatever your reason for wanting to know, we answer that burning question below.

Can You Freeze Chocolate & Should You Be Doing This?

Can You Freeze Chocolate?

Can you freeze chocolate? The answer is yes. While it is possible to store this confection in the freezer, you should consider why you are planning on putting them in the freezer in the first place.

Chocolate has an excellent shelf life. The shelf life of most milk chocolate is one year; for most dark chocolate, it’s two years.

Once you store it properly (between 65 and 70°F), you can store them without worry of spoilage.

If you are still persistent and want to freeze them, then you need to be aware there is a possibility that there might be a slight change in the taste.

It should be noted that if the chocolate is not defrosted properly, there is a chance it may develop a white or grayish filmy appearance.

How to Freeze Chocolate: A Step-by-Step Guide

Freezing chocolate is pretty easy and it should take you a couple minutes to have everything setup.

Steps:

  1. If you have chocolate bars, you are already ahead of the game, as they are already wrapped. If you have a box of chocolate or other types, then you will want to wrap them.
  2. You now going to take the plastic wrap and wrap it around the chocolate, ensuring that it is fully covered.
  3. Once the plastic wrap is on, you will now want to take some aluminum foil and give it another layer of protection. You can wrap it 2-3 times with the foil.
  4. When the wrapping is completed, you can now take the chocolate and place it in a freezer bag or an air tight container.
  5. It is always a good idea to label the container/freezer bag with the date, just so that you get an idea when it went into the freezer.

How Do You Thaw Frozen Chocolate?

If you have chocolate sitting in the freezer, the best way to thaw it is to just let it defrost in the refrigerator overnight.

Letting it sit in the fridge to thaw out is better than leaving it out at room temperature. The excess moisture that will develop when thawing at room temperature, has the potential to spoil the overall texture and taste of the chocolate.

Once it has been thawed (It takes a couple of hours), you can now enjoy the sweet goodness just like when you first put it in.

You could also eat it right out of the freezer, as a chocolate surprise popsicle.
