Guide to Freezing Hummus

Can you freeze hummus? If you make your own hummus, I am pretty sure you want to know if it is possible to freeze it. This might be very important for those of you who have made a super big batch and want to enjoy it at a later date.  Also, if you bought a bunch that was on sale and you wan’t to store it for later.

The answer is that it is possible to freeze hummus and you are able to store it in your freezer for a pretty long time.

The Freezing Process

When it comes to freezing hummus, there is a lot of different options available. The one that works the best really depends on the situation that you need it for. The good thing is that this food can be frozen for up to a year, even though most people state that 6 months is an ideal time to store it.

You need to be aware that while the hummus won’t spoil or go bad (if wrapped and stored properly), the taste and texture will change. It won’t be the same as having it fresh, but the overall change will be minimal to some.

Freezing in Portions

The good thing about freezing hummus, is that you can also do it in small portions, instead of freezing one big batch.

By having smaller portions, you can take out the amount that you need, instead of having to defrost the big batch (you should never refreeze thawed out hummus).

Options for Freezing Hummus

Freezing hummus is pretty simple and can be done really quickly, depending on if it is homemade or store bough, as well as if you want to separate it in portions etc.

Freezing Home Made Hummus

With homemade hummus, the process to get it prepared for freezing is quite easy.

  1. Take the hummus and place it in container that will be used for freezing. If you are going to be doing portions, separate the amount you need and place into different containers.
  2. Drizzle a little bit of olive oil on top to help maintain the moisture, especially when you plan to thaw it out.
  3. If the container is not air-tight, you might want to wrap it with plastic-freezer wrap and aluminum foil.
  4. You will then want to place it inside a freezer bag or air-tight freezer container.
  5. It is a good idea to put a label on it, just so you know the date that it was placed in there.

Freezing Store Bought

There is really nothing special when it comes to freezing store-bought hummus. You can basically put the container in the freezer and it should be ready to eat once you have thawed it out.

How Do You Thaw and Reheat?

When you are ready to use the frozen hummus, you need to be careful about whole you thaw it.  The ideal way is to take it out the freezer and let it sit in the refrigerator till it is thawed out properly. This process might take a couple of hours, so you have to be patient. Most people will leave it in the refrigerator overnight to defrost.

Once it is fully defrosted, you are going to find that the hummus might be a bit watery and not have the same creamy texture as when you first put it in.

If this is the case, you should stir it around and this should reconstitute back together. If you are mixing it and not getting the results you want, add a bit of olive oil. This should help to bring everything back together.

As mentioned above, the consistency and taste of the hummus will change after sitting in the freezer for some time. Some people do not notice the differences, while others complain that it is not the same as having it fresh.

After defrosting, you should consume the hummus within 5-7 days. After defrosting, you should never refreeze.

Summary
As you can see, hummus can be frozen in a few different ways. Pick one depending on your needs and test it out.
