Well you can thank your lucky stars that you ended up on this page, as it is a great guide that is designed for beginners who are looking at getting into Zumba.

Below you will get insight as to what you can expect, what you will need and if this workout is right for you.

Before You Start, Do Some Research

The first thing on your list that you need to do, before attempting to try Zumba is spend some time doing a bit of research. So many people hear about this fun Latin workout, but often have no idea what it entails.

There is tons of information available online related to this dance fitness class. So you will be able to find out everything from the history of Zumba, what kind of workout it is, if it’s a good way to get in shape and most importantly if it is something that you would enjoy (even though I’m pretty sure  it is definitely right up your alley).

You can also watch a couple videos on Youtube and see the type of dancing and moves that take place in the class.

Find the Class Right For You

Ok, so now that you have figured out that Zumba is what you want to do, the next step is finding a class. I am pretty sure there are tons of options in your city as Zumba is everywhere, so it will not be hard to locate one close by. Dance studios, gyms, the local YMCA, church groups and other organizations all will have this dance class in some shape or form, so the best bet is to head to the internet to do some more research as to what is available close to you.

Yelp.com is also a pretty useful resource for finding classes and it will tell you which ones are the most popular, along with reviews from people who have participated.

If you have family, friends or coworkers who are into Zumba, you could always ask them what’s the best place to go, especially for someone who is just starting out.

What’s the Right Clothing to Wear?

There are no specific clothes requirements that are needed for Zumba, you really just need to put on what you think you would be comfortable dancing in. So you can easily throw on a T-shirt, some sweatpants or some shorts and you will be ok. However, you will find that a lot of people will buy gym clothing, not only because it makes it easier to move around, but they like the stylish designs and looks, which works perfectly with the Zumba workout.

Tops – T-shirts are fine, but you could also consider athletic training or racerback tops, sweatshirts and more.

Bottoms – A nice pair of shorts or sweatpants that is super comfortable is all you need to dance in. Some people like the stylish look of leggings, capris and cargo pants.

Shoes – When it comes to Zumba shoes, I have a pretty good guide that looks at what options are best for this dance class. Having the right shoes are really important, especially if you want to get a pretty good workout. The main thing you need to consider when choosing sneakers is that are very comfortable to dance in. They also should be very lightweight, flexible and offers great support. There are specific sneakers that are designed for dance aerobics, so you could definitely consider those (I break them down in my guide). You could also ask your instructor as to what they recommend, as they will have a good idea as to what works and what should be avoided.

Hydrate: Bring Along Some Water

Let me say that Zumba is very intense and you are definitely going to need to bring some water/energy drink. You are going to be doing a lot of high impact moves during the class and it is a guarantee that you are going to be sweating a lot. Bring water with you to your class, as you can take a sip during breaks to ensure that you hydrated after losing all that sweat. It is also good to bring your own, as not all classes provide water for you.

Bring a Winning Attitude

I think by far the biggest thing you can bring to your Zumba class is by having a winning attitude. Let’s face it, you are not going to be the best dancer in the class, you may often feel foolish and possibly you could be moving around like you have two left feet. The moves might be difficult to pull off, you are constantly out of breath and you can’t keep up with the pace. Well, push all of that to the side and dump it out of your head. The main idea to Zumba is having fun and working out. If you just focus on yourself and have the attitude that you just want to do this class of benefit you, then you will have no problems. Remember, everybody’s there for the same thing, they are all working out some of them can’t dance to save their lives, but this believe they are having fun and burning unwanted calories in the process.

Remember it is all fun and you would be surprised how much better the class will become once you let go of your inhibitions and bring a winning attitude.

And There You Have It

Zumba is an amazing way to get in shape and hopefully this little guide gives you some insight into what to expect for all you newbie/beginners. I say go for it, you are going to enjoy yourself immensely and it might be some of the most fun you will have. It is a great way to meet new people, you will be doing so much dancing and best of all it is one of the best workouts out there.

So now it’s time to Zumba!
