Morning sickness, Check! Vomitting, Check! Unusual cravings, Check! With all these symptoms, it is probably a good indication that you’re pregnant :). Congratulations!!!! With that out of the way, I am pretty sure that you are going to want to remember this moment for the rest of your life. Yes, you will have to buy a whole new wardrobe. Yes your body will go through changes, some that will stick with you for years, but one of the best ways to capture this moment is by taking maternity pictures. You will have a visual reminder of your soon to be bundle of joy and also how you looked at that specific moment in time.
When is the Best Time to Take Maternity Pictures?
This is a question that a lot of women ask. You want that perfect period where you are able to see a noticeable belly, but also one where you’re not looking too fat or not-camera-ready 🙂
The best advice from a professional maternity photographer relating to maternity pictures is that “It is generally recommended to plan your maternity photography session in the late second or early third trimester. You want to be clearly showing but still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the process.
Earlier than that and the belly may not be prominent enough, later than that and you may feel uncomfortable. But every woman and every pregnancy is different, so listening to your body is always a good idea.” ((Sophia Field. “Maternity Portrait Guide”. Sophiafieldphotography.com. Retrieved 2012-12-07))
So it seems that that the 27-34 weeks is the ideal time period. Some of you might be able to do it earlier, others could do it later, it really depends on how comfortable you feel or how much you are showing at the time. Just keep note of that time period.
It is also a good idea to know this time, especially if you want to book your maternity photographer. Some photographers can be busy weeks in advance, so knowing your ideal time will give you an idea as to how to plan.
Best Time to Take Your Own Maternity Photos?
Professional maternity photos are cool and you should definitely get them done, as it is something that you are going to treasure for a lifetime. However, another way to document your pregnancy, would be taking your own photographs.
It seems as if a lot of people are taking self pregnancy photos and if you have a camera or you’re willing to purchase one for this project, then it is a good idea to capture this special moment yourself.

Quick Breakdown of Your Maternity Photo Schedule
- Take pictures daily as you will be able to track your progress from the beginning all the way to the end. (This can be very challenging, but you could put together a nice little project of photos after the baby is born).
- Weekly is another good way to capture your pregnancy. It does not require the dedication of taking daily photographs and the result will be pretty awesome if done properly.
- If taking pictures daily/weekly is a bit tedious, you can do it monthly. You will be able to get a good visual image of the growth of your belly month by month.
