A basket of strawberries puts a smile on my face and I am pretty sure you enjoy these fruits as well. These yummy berries are one of life’s simple joys and honestly, if I get my hand on basket, they will be gone in no time.

While strawberries are great to eat in the moment, there is nothing worse than storing them in the fridge and taking them out to eat, only see that they have mold, are soft and essentially inedible. So what is the best way to store strawberries in the fridge before they start to get yucky?

  1. Generally when you get your fruits from the store, the first thing you usually do is wash them. Do not wash the strawberries, unless you plan on eating them right away. Strawberries soak up water like a sponge and they will begin to spoil before you know it. So wash them when you are ready to eat or use them.
  2. Do not store strawberries in the little basket that they come in. Before you put them in the fridge, it is important that you take them out and place them in an appropriate container (See below).
  3. You can take the strawberries and place them on a plate or cookie sheet that is lined with a paper towel. The paper towel will help to absorb excess moisture and having them spaced out gives the berries space to breathe.
  4. You can also try placing the strawberries in a glass container that has a lid on it. The berries won’t last as long as what was done in step #3, so it is a good idea to use them quickly.

If you follow all the instructions above, the strawberries should be able to last for up to a week. This is a lot better than having them turn to mush, after just a couple of days.

If you want to keep the strawberries for much longer, you should consider freezing them.
